As a make up artists it's always good to be aware of what shows are on at all of your local theatres. Here are some interesting shows that are coming up in the Glasgow/Edinburgh areas!

The Tron Theatre (Glasgow)

Cardinal Sinne (22nd Nov - 1st Oct)

A religious romp presented in a mix of traditional comic farce, serious soliloquy and ludicrous litany, Cardinal Sinne will investigate the root and responsibility of institutions in their perpetuation of sexual inequality and bias.

The Big Friendly Giant captures dreams and keeps them in bottles for children to enjoy whilst they sleep. He is unlike other giants. For a start, he doesn't like to eat people! Questions For A Make Up Artist

What Questions Would You Ask A Professional Make Up Artist?


I know I'd want to know everything they could tell me that could help me through my career, but if I was only allowed to ask 5 questions? Well, the following is what they would be...


1. How would you get started in the theatrical make up industry? (If Applicable)

2. What's the easiest way to apply fake lashes? Or how do you apply them?

3. Can working on/with models be hard?

4. Where are the best places to network and meet other people in the make up industry (including models and photographers)?

5. Do you also do hair? Do you find make up or hair easier?

1. Beetlejuice - Barbara Maitland



The make up in "Beetlejuice" was (and still is) outstanding. One of my favourite looks is of "Barbara Maitland", and her huge prosthetic mask for when she tries to scare away the new arrivals in her house - it couldn't have been easy to wear! I love this makeup because I think it's so outlandish and completely weird - even for Beetlejuice!


2. Hellboy - Abe Sapien


 Every make up artist has heard of "Hellboy" - the main character has an amazing make up look of red skin and horns which couldn't have been easy to create - but nobody really focuses on his best bud and sidekick "Abe Sapien" even though I think that this coupling of make up and prosthetics is far more astounding in terms of difficulty and overall impact. I love this look mainly because Abe is one of my favourite characters, but also because of how great it looks in the movies.


3. Pans Labrynth - The Pale Man

This make up look is almost legendary - "pan's labrynth" being one of the most famous cult movies in the world in past years - and honestly, how could you not find this cool as hell? The "Pale Man" character may be creepy, but his look of baggy, almost melting skin and the eyes in the palms of his hands is definitely noteworthy, and probably one of the most creative and innovative ways of creating a characters look.


4. Alien - Alien Bursting Through Stomach



Although the alien itself was only an animated puppet, the fake blood and guts in this scene - including the chest it popped out of - was all created through the magic of prosthetics and make up. I love this because it became one of the most historical scenes in sci-fi movies, all with the help of an amazing make up crew.


5- Lord of the Rings - Orcs


The Orcs in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy really are a good example of how ugly make up can make a person look. Each Orc character had his own nasty looking face, which for most included prosthetic pieces, that had to be worn consistently throughout the many years of shooting the movies. This meant a lot of work from the make up team to continually create some very precise looks, which had to be exactly the same in each scene that was shot. I love the Orcs, because I know that behind every look was a hard working team of make up artists who deserve to be applauded.


Wigs In Films

1- Alice in Wonderland - The Mad Hatter


To create the locks on Mr Depp's head for this look must have taken a lot of time, effort - and hair! Including his eyebrows which were also created for the role, the bright orange hair used for the "Mad Hatter" is one of the best uses of wigs in the modern movie industry. I love this look because his hair definitely matches his personality - crazy!

2- Marie Antoinette - Marie Antionette

As a French queen, the real Marie Antoinette will have worn many wigs that look just like the one's created for the movie of her namesake. Tall, white, hard front wigs - in many different styles, and sometimes colours - were created for the movie so that the actress would look just like her. Wigs take many days - sometimes even weeks - to produce and can cost thousands, meaning the budget for costume must have been immense!
I love this wig look because it looks very realistic for the character role, and is very elegant and structured well.                                          

3- Hunger Games - EffieTrinket


"Effie Trinket" is a flamboyant character with many looks of extravagance - one notable point is definitely her hair! For her character, many wigs had to be created in different styles and colours so that they would match with her colourful clothing combinations to complete her somewhat futuristic looks. I love the wigs that were used for "Effie", especially the yellow one used for her butterfly outfit in the second "Hunger Games" movie, as although it was different, it still looked somewhat pretty, a credit to the creator.

1- We Will Rock You


"We Will Rock You" is very much a rock'n'roll musical performance, so many rock styled wigs were needed to create and complete the characters, who were fighting to keep rock and uniqueness alive. Most of the wigs used are lace front, so that they look more natural. However, if it's something like a mohawk then hard front wigs can be used as the front of the wig is not as important. I love the use of wigs as they create and extra depth to the characters looks, creating a very outgoing and rebellious feel.




2- An Evening of Burlesque

Although burlesque is a form of dance, every look must be perfect and complete. Usually wigs are only used for individuals doing solo roles, as they have to create a certain persona to go along with the piece they perform. Wigs for burlesque shows can be extravagant, elegant, short and simple - anything that's needed can be done. I love the fact that wigs are used in burlesque performances, because it adds to the idea that the dancers are playing a role, hiding behind a character - which makes them that much more teasing and tempting to the audience!

College Q&A - Just some interesting questions

Q- What were your expectations on starting the course? 
A- I don't really think I had many expectations, other than "This is going to be so much better than school!". I kind of expected a little more freedom at least, for instance; not having the teacher constantly breathing down your neck; the longer lunch times; being able to go to the toilet when you actually need to. And those are probably the biggest differences compared to school. I feel more like an adult, which is a welcome change.

Q- What are your initial thoughts on West College Scotland and the Media make up course?
A- I love both! The college and the course are both amazing! The college itself is easy enough to navigate and get around, and all the staff are really nice and easy to talk to as well. The course itself is so much fun! It's such a nice, laid back attitude, but you still learn a lot every time you're in. 

Q- What is your funniest moment of college so far?
A- There's been a few times we've had some very interesting conversations, but it's always a laugh with my class!

Q- What is the most interesting thing you have learned or learned how to do so far?
A- I think probably when we learned how to make the prosthetic pieces from the wax and the liquid latex, because I find that side of make up a lot more fun than any of the beauty stuff.

A- Ve Neill, by far. She's pretty damn awesome! (I wrote my last post all about her too!)

Q- Why do you want to be a MUA?
A- I wanted to do sfx make up, but I only found this out in fifth year when I was playing around with some fake blood and stuff like that. Ever since then I've been addicted to finding out how to actually do the cool stuff I've seen others do. It's always really interested me anyway, but I thought "Hey, I could do that!" And so here I am.

Ve Neill - An Amazing Artist

              Ve Neill is one of my heroes in the make up world.

Ve Neill is by far one of the best American make up artists today, proven by her long lasting career and many awards from her work in the industry. Over her 37 years working as a make up artist, she has truly earned her 21 international nominations (and wins!) for her skills.

One of Neill's first projects was on the movie Edward Scissorhands, which still stands today as a masterpiece of make up artistry. She managed to turn the handsome and tanned Johnny Depp into a pale, pasty and scarred character, and people still remember this years on.

One of Neill's most famous make up looks has come from her involvement in the popular "Hunger Games" series. Neill helped to create many looks on set, but her most famous is by far for the character of "Effie Trinket", an eccentric woman from the main city of "The Capitol" where fashion and make up have become exaggerated to the extreme.

Although Neill is still in the business of proffessional Make Up Artistry, in 2011 she joined a panel of judges on the American TV show "Face Off". This show sees contestants putting their make up skills to the test, creating a range of looks including using prosthetics and even body paint.

If you can find it online and are interested in make up, then I urge you to give it a watch. But be careful, you may find yourself addicted to the show (like me!)

So please, look up Ve Neill and give her the respect she deserves as an anazing and show-stopping Make Up Artist.

NASMAH

So, looking up what NASMAH is and it turns out the site is pretty cool.

NASMAH is the UK association for professional make-up artists and hair dressers who work in film, television, theatre, fashion and photography industries.They are a non-profit organisation which is funded by memberships and sponsorships.

They also have loads of links to different resources, organisations and suppliers, which is pretty useful.

One supplier link is to Screenface and they're brilliant. Screenface have a huge range of make-up kits, chairs, mirrors,adhesives... Everything a Make Up Artist needs in her/his kit :)

Definitely give them a look up!

So today I realised that a basic 'straight' make-up is a lot harder than I thought.
